Colour: Resene Coast

"The first I thought of with 'Resene Coast' are large open spaces in front of the sea; a vast expanse of ocean, beaches, cliff and sky. I've inverted the word in itself and figuratively colour blocked it. I closed the image of the coast into a small room and constricted the image.

In using the idea of contrast, I took the coast and and many things you'd see on it, and picked something that could be as beautiful as a coastline. I thought of building and architecture. Swiss, Danish and Norwegian architects are some of the most renowned architects in the world, creating art in the form of buildings.

Looking from an aerial view of the watch museum in Switzerland, the beauty of the building cannot be seen, but change the angle and the building appears. I loved the curves and simplicity of the structure. I want to contrast the outer layer of my garment subtly, where necessary and with authority, then surprise the viewer with colour when they least expect it when the garment is turned.

I've noticed that proportion has strong authorities in architecture and so I've played with proportions of the jacket and trousers. The two are clearly separated but work together.

Being inspired by confining and restricting ideas, I thought of strait jackets and really constructing something. The collar will partially obscure the face, playing with the contrast between freedom and restriction. The facings are in a dark red contrast, and buckle closures on the front and buckle ties on the sleeves fit together the strait jacket aesthetic."
